Sticks and Paddles Yong Moua, Solomon Atta, Aaron Taylor
This particular project is series of sticks and paddles that are woven together to create a fabric. This fabric is then actuated to create curvatures.
The technique we discovered for getting curvatures out of this system was a combination of the weave pattern of the paddles and the actuation or condition of the paddles at the joints.
This simply refers to how the paddles are displaced along the pegs at the joints.
The whole system depend on the friction at the joints to function. These constraints greatly simplified the system, and made it possible for the pegs and paddles to grow almost without limit.
Local Scale
The local component parts consist of a peg, two different paddles, one horizontal and the other, diagonal at 45 degrees.
Local Component Variables:
A: Horizontal Paddles are placed on the outside of the peg and the two center paddles are rotated 45 degrees.
A’: Component A is rotated 180 degrees.
B: The two horizontal paddles of Component A are pushed into the opposite holes.
B’: Component B is rotated 180 degrees.

Reflective quality of the paddles are shown in the rendering below.
Another variable are the paddle widths. As the paddle width widen, it reduces the candle light quality and increases the radius of the curvature.
